I tend to read the forum with the main sections all collapsed, and click on the "Show Unread Posts Since Last Visit" to read new stuff, rather than browsing through the different boards.  Today I noticed that the "Latest Post" shown in the Forum Stats section at the bottom of the page wasn't the latest post at all, but one which was several days old;  the list of the ten most "Recent Posts", however, was accurate.

I was going to ask Wilfred about this, but I thought I'd do a bit of experimentation first - and I discovered that I had one, and only one, section expanded, and the "Latest Post" shown was the latest one in this particular section.  I played with expanding and collapsing sections in different combinations, and discovered the following:

  • All sections expanded:  "Latest Post" is really the latest post
  • Only some (1+) sections expanded:  "Latest Post" is the latest post in the expanded sections
  • All sections collapsed:  "Latest Post" does not appear at all.

I guess the idea is that if one is not the least bit interested in the boards in one particular section, and therefore collapses it, one isn't bothered by being shown the latest post in that section, but only the latest post in the expanded sections in which one is interested!

Yeh, that's right. If you'd asked me i'd have told you. Same as if you arent allowed to see a particular section, then you don't see the latest post in that section.
