How would I, the American moving to London with British citizen husband, achieve the NIN to be able to work?  Can I start working to get this now, or must i wait to receive my 2 year spousal visa ?  I'm currently waiting in the u.s. for the visa to process.
Thanks   -Christi

You'll have to wait until you get your visa and have actually made the move.  You can start looking for work before you have it, you can even be hired and work without it.  It's just that, without it, you're taxed at a higher 'emergency' tax rate (which you shouldn't have any problem getting refunded to you once you have your NI number and are on your correct tax code).

Once you've made the move to the UK, have your husband find out where your nearest JobCentre is and give them a call.  I've heard the procedure on this has changed a lot since I did it three years ago...you may not even have to go in in person, they may just send you a form to fill out, but I'm not really sure.  In any event, check it out once you're in the UK.
