Therefore, if we win the lottery over here we would still have to pay tax on it in the USA even if we become a UK citizen.

While this is true - I think I would play the "what they don't know can't hurt them" game....  Grin

Speaking of taxes, did anyone hear about the stimulus checks this year...if you filed taxes for 2007, you're supposed to get something like $300 from the USA government (don't know if this amount is tax free).

It's supposed to help stimulate the economy. I've gone through the IRS website and it doesn't say anything about ex-pats being exempt, so if you want some "free" money....file your taxes (which should have been done before April 15th).

I still haven't done mine....

Oooo Now that sounds interesting.... wonder if they would allow it for expats?

Not sure if Paula has or hasn't - would they still pay if you haven't yet done it? (I mean when you do get around to filing your return)

well worth a good look at for a free $600!   Wink

Steve - yes, I saw no one picked up on it. Taxes you know; blares everything out.

If no one has a preference, my place is available for hosting this evening. We'll whip up some food and pull some steaks and salmon for the main course options. I am well stocked on drink options, bandages in case someone(s) falls down, and a few places for over night stays if desired. How does 10pm, your time, sound?

You wouldn't get double for being married (especially since you're not American). In order to get it Paula would have had to file for 2007. Nothing on the IRS website says expats cannot get it....so worth looking into it.

And also the $300 is a guide...some will get more, but as Expats normally go down to ZERO for taxable income, I am assuming that's all we would get (if anything).

It's probably worth reading the IRS website for yourself to see if Paula can get it.

Yeah we realised I would not figure in it - but she has filed and we are just waiting and seeing if something happens

Yeah - that's what we thought too...

I'm leaving that to Paula - the IRS stuff is a mystery to me  Huh

Thanks for the input though

Just wanted to clarify that Yes your taxes should be filed by 15th April unless you live over seas and then you get an extension until June. We just sent ours off a couple of weeks ago.

I actually received a letter from the IRS a few weeks after receiving my tax package (which I think came in February) explaining about the stimulus payments and the only way to know how much you may get is to file a return.  Nothing else you have to do.  Except I THINK you need to have had a certain amount of US income to actually get a payment...don't know.  It has, however, addressed to me here in England, so I assume that expats are eligible if they meet the other criteria.  That's the last I've heard of it, although I filed a tax return and did have some US income for 2007...time will tell, but I'm not holding my breath.  Whatever I might get goes right back into my US checking/savings account to pay student loans.

My daughter, who lives in the US, 20 years old and single, got a check for $600, which she immediately deposited into her savings account - no wild child spending there.  I keep forgetting to ask my son about it, but he hasn't mentioned it either, so don't know what, if anything, he's received...
