wow, something you wouldn't expect to find in the US or Canada. Did they sell Rover's in Canada?

Yes, they did but not in any great quantities. Anybody remember the Sterling which was a rebadged Rover sold in the US?

I don't recall that one (obviously, not having lived there  Wink) but Rover had a model of car named Sterling in the UK - the top of the range as I recall

A close relative - based on Honda underpinnings - but the company eventually dropped the Rover brand in the US.  I heard that the leather interior was badly affected by strong sunlight but can find no evidence of this in internet reviews.  Dashboards that fell apart seem to have been a feature.  The roads are far more rugged here in Canada, and in the US, so a powerful front-driver must have been interesting in the potholes.

yeah, I remember Sterlings, IIRC they came out in the 80's / early 90's. I never realised they were Rover. Although now that I think about it now, it does look like a Rover that my in-laws owned.

I just had a moment of clarity and I remember the Sterling looking very much like the Accord and the new 4 door Acuras. It just never dawned on me that it was based on Honda's underpinnings. Mind you it doesn't surprise me that car makers use each others designs. The MX5/Miata is based on the baby Elan.

Just testing my new Acer Aspire 1 netbook ahead of autumn tour to UK and the Far East. $475 including tax. Skype is working with inbuilt camera and microphone. Just spoke to my nephew in Oakville.  I will be on Rocket FM this sunday on the phone here from Toronto reviewing the sunday papers, hooking up with my brother in the studio in Lewes and other brother in Hong Kong.  Yes, the year has gone round again and it is time for bonfire!

Does this mean you will not be in your regular slot on Rocket FM?

Jan: Flying tomorrow.  I am doing a short run on Rocket FM this year starting on Monday Oct 27 doing 7 two-hour shows weekdays to Nov 4th at 17:00-19:00 local time.  Then the big bonfire show on the 5th, 18:00 until 00:00.  Close down on the sixth.  Then to Macau for the Grand Prix.

Ah, so.  Then I will commence listening.  I did listen a bit the other day.

Jan, I gave you a shout out on bonfire night. Rocket FM is all done for another year and I am now in Macau at the Grand Prix. This gambling town is facing an uncertain future as punters head for the exits. The Las Vegas Sands Corp is scaling back here and elsewhere.

Rupert, THANK YOU!  I was definitely listening at my desk while working.  Ye Younge Lawyer was a wee bit confused by it, but I was undeterred.

For the occasion, I had a Lewes bonfire photo of the crosses honoring the martyrs for my desktop, and I watched the streaming video, as well (there was definitely lots of fire going on).  I think you were thoroughly enjoying yourself!

Peace,
Jan

Jan: I'm back in Toronto after travelling half way round the world. The bonfire bash was quite up to snuff and the Macau Grand Prix was also good from my point of view in the press office. I need a few days to get over the jetlag then it is back on the book project in December.

Happy Xmas to all at UKUS Forum. This is my picture of the
year taken at the ghost town of Gebo, Montana in July.
The truck is thought to be a 1939 Dodge, in need of TLC.

Who'd a thought it? Gas prices are way down in Canada - lows in Ontario are 64.9 cents per litre for gas, 82.5 for diesel.  For UK readers the gas price equates to 36 pence per litre at $1.80 to the £.  This is good news for all Canadians who drive to work, practically all of them, assuming of course they still have a job to go to. Many stations have been out of gas over the holiday as the delivery trucks couldn't get through the snow.  We've had a white Christmas here all right.
No doubt the green masochists will be wringing their hands because the day of reckoning is once again deferred.
